Matilda’s Horned Bush Viper (Atheris matildae)

Discovered in SW Tanzania in 2010, the viper can grow to 65cm. “This particular animal looks fierce and probably is venomous,” said researcher Tim Davenport, a Briton who has lived in Tanzania for 12 years. “However, it is actually a very calm animal and not at all aggressive. I have handled one on a number of occasions.” The Viper was named for Davenport’s 7 tear old daughter.

Habushu (ハブ酒)

… an awamori-based liqueur made in Okinawa, Japan. Other common names include Habu Sake or Okinawan Snake Wine. Habushu is adequately named after the habu snake(Trimeresurus flavoviridis) which belongs to the Pit viper family and is closely related to the American rattler or copperheads. Habu snakes are venomous and native to areas in the Southeast Asian Region and other large island groups including the Phillipines, Ryukus, and Japan.  A bite from a habu snake can cause nausea, vomiting, hypotension, and possibly death. There also have been cases where victims report the loss of motor function in hands and legs following treatment…
